What? No 'fifteen' or 'seventeen'?
I must admit, my favorites keep changing.
As in 'fifteen' or 'seventeen'?
Yes, I like those two as well.
One anonymous comment from the day of the opening was that generally these paintings are "too packaged". But also that some of the colour experiments are pretty good. And too, that the earlier, cantilevered diptychs (like five) are among the best of the group. As well, that they are "dumb and aggressive". Which was echoed by another viewer's comment that, "the colours don't match."
I can appreciate all these comments, and yet they don't undo my enjoyment of these paintings.s
"Dumb and aggressive" was me, but I changed it to "stupid and aggressive", 'cuz I thought 'dumb' implied a quiet that certainly isn't there.
The diptychs are intriguing for how dynamically they change when you move around them; interestingly, touring through the show with Robert Scott last week, he pointed out the same aspect with the flatter works, as he picked his favorite views of some of those works as being off to one side or another.
Bruce has said he'll be at the show again tomorrow (Saturday, March 14) from 1 til 4, in the event there are any stragglers hoping to take it in before it closes on the 21st.
I'm looking forward to reading Sarah Hamilton's take on the show at Shotgun-Review.ca... I hope it comes out before the show does.
